Blu5 Labs Ltd of Ta’ Xbiex and the University of Malta, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a collaborative research programme covering a broad range of technologies including embedded electronic systems, microelectronics, telecommunications and IT security. The collaboration opens the door for joint projects in areas as varied as satellite communications, over-the-horizon passive radar systems and digital radio technologies.
The research and development will be part-funded by Malta Enterprise through their newly launched Research and Innovation Schemes, and will lead to the development of highly innovative solutions for the market, as well as high-level research publications.
Dr Ing. Antonio Varriale, Managing Director of Blu5 Labs, noted that “We are honoured to have the opportunity to actively cooperate with University of Malta Faculties. The skills and the resources that the University will put into this cooperation represent a perfect match with Blu5 group technologies. The Dean of the Faculty of ICT, Professor Ernest Cachia commented, “The track-record that the Faculty of ICT has demonstrated in its suitability and ability to generate and maintain high levels of valid collaboration with leading local and international names in the field of micro and nanoelectronics gives us the confidence and experience needed to offer substantial value in collaboration opportunities such as this one offered by Blu5 Labs.”
Dr Andrew Sammut, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, said that “Thanks to the recent investments in upgrading its R&D laboratories and resources, the University is now able to engage with innovative R&D companies such as Blu5 Labs Ltd. Through the availability of our state-of-the-art facilities, the capabilities of our staff in our specialised Departments, and with the support of our highly skilled M.Sc. and Ph.D. students, we are now have the capability to engage with and add value to companies seeking research partnerships to support them in the implementation of their R&D projects.”
